Media Culture Studies

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Media Culture Studies belongs to the field of cultural media research. This research-oriented program is based on the reciprocal relationship between culture and media: each culture shapes its media formations, and conversely, all cultural processes are fundamentally formatted by media. From this perspective, media are not understood as neutral transmission channels, but as active mediators of human world relations. Media thus determine sensory perception, serve to generate, store and process knowledge, and shape social relationships and political public spheres. In this program, students acquire theoretical, historical, and methodologically sound competencies for the critical analysis of digital and analog media cultures. Students examine media in their specific inherent logic: their material composition, their functionality, their ecological embedding, and their historical development, also from a decolonial perspective. Furthermore, students engage intensively with current professional discourses as well as society-wide debates at the intersections of art, society, science, and technology.
