About the Program

The Comparative Literature program focuses on the cross-border character of literature, examining connections between cultures through their literary works. Students develop an awareness of the diversity and interconnectedness of European literature while exploring the cultural foundations of the economic and political unification process that has shaped the European continent since the second half of the 20th century. The program examines international connections between authors, texts from different languages, nations, and cultures, as well as relationships between literature and other arts such as painting, theater, film, comics, and digital media. The Mainz Comparative Literature department is the oldest and one of the largest and most prestigious in the German-speaking world, featuring a balance between theoretical knowledge and creative approaches to innovative questions.
