Linguistics Bachelor of Arts

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Linguistics program focuses on how language functions as a central means of communication for people worldwide. Students explore how language works, how it can be described and explained, why languages around the world differ, and what effect language has on speakers. Linguists study the approximately 7,000 languages on Earth, examining both theoretical and practical aspects of language structures and their impact on speakers. The program doesn't focus on a specific language or language family, but rather analyzes structural properties and functions of language in general, comparing different language practices. The curriculum includes semantics, pragmatics, syntax, various language theories, historical development of language systems, influence of social and cultural contexts on language, neurocognitive abilities related to language acquisition and production, linguistic methods for language analysis, and learning one or two new modern foreign languages. Students can specialize in language typology or neurolinguistics.
