Latin Studies Combined Bachelor

About the Program

Students studying Latin Studies will review key texts and authors of ancient Latin literature and can put these into the context of literary history and (cultural) history. Students will be able to identify and highlight the significance of this literature for the development of European intellectual history. Students will learn to use a variety of philological methods to analyse Latin texts of a medium to advanced level and to interpret and translate them with the help of the relevant tools, taking the historic conditions of their creation into consideration. The research focuses of Classical Philology at Marburg enable intensive study of a) the canonical texts of Roman antiquity, on which European cultural traditions in the sciences, literature, the arts and philosophy are based, and their historical contextualisation; b) the central guiding principles and phases of the reception of the ancient world in the Middle Ages, the modern era and the present day. An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which students will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.
