Latin Philology

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Latin Philology studies the Latin language and Roman literature from its beginnings to late antiquity. The program also incorporates Greek and post-ancient European literature to examine the impact of Roman culture. Students gain knowledge and competencies in linguistic areas (morphology, syntax, grammar) and literary fields (genre, ancient literary theory, metrics, language styles, source research). The curriculum includes lectures on Roman literary and intellectual history, Greek predecessors, and reception in European literature, covering authors, genres, and epochs. Style exercises enhance language skills, while reading exercises improve the ability to read, understand, and translate Latin texts. The goal is to develop the ability to work scientifically with Latin language and literature. The program qualifies graduates for careers related to literature (journalism, editing, dramaturgy, libraries) and professions requiring strong logical understanding due to the intensive study of Latin grammar and philological interpretation of literary texts.
