About the Program

The Saarbrücken Master's program is unique within German-speaking Latin American studies with its focus on cultural and media studies. In addition to language practice in Spanish and Portuguese, the program includes literary, cultural and media studies and addresses transcultural and post/decolonial issues. Central fields are Latin American cultural theory, trauma and memory research, (post)colonial studies, and Latin American theater and film. Courses are offered on cultural transfer in intermedial contexts, translation as cultural transfer, and in the field of Border Studies, especially in the context of transamerican cultural relations. The language modules are taught by native speakers from Mexico and Brazil as well as by renowned translators of Hispanic American literature. The Master's program is integrated into an interdisciplinary research focus on trans- and interculturality. Students have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects. In the major subject, they also complete a stay abroad in a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country. The program comprises 120 credit points (CP), with 93 CP for the extended major subject (including 22 CP for the Master's thesis) and 27 CP for the minor subject.
