About the Program

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary minor program offered by the departments of Geosciences, History, Cultural History and Cultural Studies, Social Sciences, and 'Language, Literature, Media'. The German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the Museum of Ethnology, and the LINGA Library are also involved. The program is designed as cross-disciplinary Area Studies, with the goal of acquiring region-specific expertise from inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives, based on the foreign languages Spanish or Portuguese. One of these languages is chosen as a profile language. Students are prepared to deal with the complex problems and phenomena of the Latin American region on a broad level and using interdisciplinary approaches. The standard period of study for the minor in Latin American Studies is six semesters.
