KunstpädagogikArt Education

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Art Education program (Kunstpädagogik) focuses on the complex field of art and aesthetic practice education. The curriculum covers artistic working methods and techniques, as well as courses in art history and subject didactics (e.g., children's drawings, aspects of aesthetic behavior of adolescents, etc.). The teaching methodology is based on two pillars: action orientation and interlinking of different aspects. Materials play an essential role, with seminars focusing on material processing within artistic processes, material production, and questioning the role of materials in art education processes. The scientific research primarily examines the aesthetic practice of children and adolescents and the role of materials in educational processes using qualitative-empirical methods.

The Bachelor's program in Art Education at the University of Würzburg uniquely combines artistic practice, theoretical foundation, and pedagogical reflection. These three areas are not separated but consistently interlinked throughout the program. The program can be studied as a major subject (75 ECTS) or as a minor subject (60 ECTS). Students' own artistic work is central to the program, with students developing individual questions, themes, and forms of expression through experimental engagement with materials. Workshop complexes systematically teach fundamental artistic techniques from classical painting and printmaking to casting and woodworking to digital and contemporary media. Regular exhibition activities allow students to make their artistic practice publicly visible. A special focus of the program is on practice orientation in socially relevant fields, with internships not necessarily limited to traditional educational institutions but allowing for artistic and pedagogical work in social contexts. The theoretical foundation is broad, covering art history, aesthetics, theory of children's drawing, art didactics, and methodological questions of teaching. The program features a family-like atmosphere with small groups enabling intensive supervision.
