About the Program

Catholic Theology deals with the content, forms of expression, history, and tradition of the Christian faith as derived from the biblical message and its transmission and interpretation by the Church. The various approaches to the belief in one God, as reflected in the testimonies of Israel and the Christian Church, are examined using a variety of methods corresponding to the current state of academic disciplines (historical-critical, linguistic, literary, and cultural studies). The content of faith is viewed and reinterpreted in relation to religious, philosophical, and social questions of the present. The historical integration of the Church as a community of believers is also taken into account. Today's theology proves to be an academic discipline that reflects anew on the fundamental questions of human existence based on the biblical message and relates its results to many other sciences (philosophy, history, philology, German studies, pedagogy, sociology, art, music, biology, physics, etc.). The study of Catholic Theology in the teaching-related Bachelor's/Master's program qualifies for teaching at gymnasiums (Bachelor and Master of Education and traineeship) and at vocational schools. In conjunction with the accompanying internships, it imparts basic and in-depth knowledge and skills to fulfill the professional tasks as a religion teacher.
