About the Program

The MA in Jewish Philosophy and Religion fosters independent analytical approaches to original texts, critical reflection upon religious phenomena, and the development of creative solutions to complex questions in philosophy and religion. Thematically, it covers a broad range of core issues in Jewish philosophy and religion from antiquity to the present, with special emphasis on the early modern period. Linguistically, the key objective is to broaden and deepen students' knowledge of Hebrew. The program has an interdisciplinary focus with cooperations with the Institute of World Christianity and Religious Studies, the Institute of Philosophy, the Jewish community, and the Institute for the History of the German Jews (IGDJ). The program structure consists of a core area (Hebrew language modules and themed modules on Jewish philosophy and religion), an advanced area (methodology, history of ideas, text analysis), a free elective area, and a final module (master's thesis, colloquium, oral examination).
