Jewish Civilizations

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

M.A. Jewish Civilizations is a joint master's program of the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg and Paideia - The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden. The first part of the study takes place in Stockholm. The consecutive Master's program 'Jewish Civilizations' aims to develop the ability to culturally explore Jewish civilizations in their various expressions through intensive language and source study, with a focus on Hebrew language and source competence. In addition, students acquire all the necessary theoretical knowledge and methodological tools to deal with the complex forms of Jewish civilizations in the past, present, and future, also in an intercultural context. Jewish life is not limited to religious rites but encompasses all areas of human existence. The field has intersections with all areas of the humanities and beyond. The program has two orientations: it serves as an advanced or broadening master's program for B.A. programs in Jewish Studies or Judaistics, and as a different specialized master's program for B.A. programs in other cultural, social, legal, humanities or theological disciplines. Paideia is committed to revitalizing Jewish life and culture in Europe through its educational programs that train community leaders, academics, culture workers and social activists. The institute is pan-European, bringing participants from all of Europe together, promoting exchange and experience sharing. Paideia provides pluralistic, non-denominational and inclusive activities, with programs open to everybody interested in promoting Jewish life and culture, regardless of denomination or affiliation.
