About the Program

The Japanese Studies program in Hamburg has a long tradition - it is the oldest institution in Germany that deals scientifically with Japan. The Master's program in Japanese Studies is research-oriented, but also imparts skills with application and professional relevance. Japanese Studies is the science of Japanese culture in history and present, based on Japanese sources. Studying at the master's level should enable independent scientific work with Japanese primary sources and the processing of scientific questions about history and present. Focus areas that can be deepened in the Master's program are Japanese literature, language and cultural history, religious and intellectual history, as well as politics and society of Japan.
