About the Program

The aim of this degree program is for students to acquire a high standard of knowledge of the Japanese language and fundamental knowledge of Japanese society, theories, methods, and current research topics in order to be able to conduct independent analyses in the fields of social and cultural science. The program consists of two parts: language courses and modules in social and cultural studies. The language program spans five semesters and teaches beginner and intermediate level materials. The modules focus on social change with emphasis on social media use, energy policy, demographic change, gender roles, and ethnic minorities in Japan. Students are strongly recommended to take a year in Japan between their fourth and fifth semesters.
