Islamic Religious Studies

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Islamic Religious Studies degree program focuses on topics dealing with traditional scriptural foundations, religious norms and methods, schools of Islam and religious doctrines, religious practices, cultural history, and contemporary theological issues. Students receive reference and technical language skills required to read and understand simple source texts in Arabic. The degree program does not focus on a specific school or branch of Islam, but addresses and discusses various different schools and branches. The program can be studied as a one-subject or two-subject Bachelor's degree program, comprising compulsory modules (Arabic 1-4, lectures and seminars from scriptural foundations, religious studies, and social action) and compulsory elective modules. After the first year, students take a preliminary examination. The second phase (fifth and sixth semesters) involves more in-depth study and independent scientific work through a Bachelor's thesis.
