About the Program

The specific teaching content of Islamic theology as a science includes the disciplines of Islamic textual studies (Quran and Hadith), Islamic law, Islamic religious practice, religious education, Islamic philosophy, Kalām and mysticism, Islamic history and contemporary Islam. Another important pillar of the degree programme is language training in Arabic; practical language skills are also taught. Special emphasis is placed on teaching content relating to the social role of Islam in the globalised world, including questions of interreligiosity, comparative theology and the plurality of Islamic currents and Muslim realities in Germany and Europe. In addition to subject-specific skills, students are also taught professional skills that qualify them for the teacher training Master's degree programme, in which they are trained as religious education teachers. The Bachelor's degree programme aims to impart a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the academic foundations of Islamic theology, with particular emphasis on a comparative perspective.
