ISATEC - International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The M.Sc. Marine Biology programme at the University of Bremen offers two study profiles: Marine Biology and International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology (ISATEC). The Marine Biology profile is strongly research-oriented, training graduates to develop hypotheses-driven research concepts and design appropriate experimental approaches to answer questions related to marine ecosystem and organism functioning, as well as potential impacts of environmental change. The ISATEC profile has a more applied focus, addressing the sustainable use and conservation of tropical coastal ecosystems such as coral reefs and mangroves. The programme follows a unique concept with close ties to several world-class marine research institutions in Bremen, including the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI). Many courses are taught in the laboratories and facilities of these institutes, benefiting from cutting-edge research infrastructure and direct contact with leading experts. The programme is a 2-year full-time course with a high proportion of practical classes, taught in English, and offers training in state-of-the-art methodologies, specialization options, field trips, and opportunities to participate in research expeditions. Employment opportunities for graduates exist worldwide in research institutions, fishing and aquaculture industry, environmental conservation and management, museums, zoological gardens, aquaria, scientific journalism, eco-consulting, environmental impact assessments, eco-tourism, blue biotechnology, and coastal zone management.
