Iranian Studies

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Over four semesters, the Iranian Studies master's program provides well-founded scientific training in the fields of cultural studies and history. It imparts skills and methods in the field of Persian literature and culture and in the history of the Iranian world up to the present day. Familiarity with Persian, in its classical and modern embodiments, is both an educational goal as well as the foundation of scholarly work. The geographical area comprises modern Iran and Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the traditional Persophonic regions. The program builds on bachelor's programs in Oriental and Islamic Studies, but is also directed to graduates in other subjects with well-founded Persian knowledge. It is embedded in the broad range of courses of the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, resulting in a highly interdisciplinary approach. Major topics include Persian literature, Medieval and recent/modern history of the Iranian world, and Cultural-anthropological studies of the Iranian societies of the present.
