About the Program

The field of Intercultural German Studies explores conceptual, theoretical and methodological aspects of interculturalism. The Intercultural German Studies / German as a Foreign Language Program at the University of Göttingen focuses primarily on the scientific description of German language and culture as well as its transmission in intercultural contexts. The Department of Intercultural German Studies, located within the Department of German Philology, was founded in 2004 by Prof. Dr. Hiltraud Casper-Hehne. The Department promotes diverse international cooperation, which has resulted in numerous scientific projects concerning intercultural and contrast-cultural themes. Graduates work on questions of interculturalism and on the description and transmission of language and culture in both private and public institutions, including international organizations, publishing and media organizations, language schools, university departments teaching German as a Foreign Language, institutions of adult education, or cultural institutions like the Goethe-Institut.
