Indo-European Linguistics

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The "Indo-European Linguistics" program focuses on the Indo-European linguistic family. The objective of this discipline is to define the familial relationships that exist between the languages in this language family and to gain insights into the processes of differentiation which have led to the languages spoken today. Historical-comparative linguistics focuses preferably on the earliest accessible stages of the individual languages and attempts to gather their linguistic evidence as precisely as possible, to describe their phonology and grammatical structures in detail, to collect vocabulary and to define the meanings of words. Words and grammatical forms are also examined with respect to their etymology. In addition to comprehensive training in historical-comparative (Indo-European) linguistic studies, a specialization in anatolistics (Hittitology) and in typological-comparative linguistic studies is also offered in Marburg. There are professional opportunities for successful graduates particularly in the field of adult education, libraries and publishing, cultural mediation and management, language instruction and public service.
