About the Program

The Master's program in Historical and Cultural Sciences (Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften) is a consecutive study program that builds on relevant bachelor's degrees in historical and cultural sciences. In this program, students select a combination of one major and one minor subject from a list of subjects, following specific combination rules. The program has a research-oriented profile and provides a framework for combining various historically, philologically, and culturally oriented subjects from departments 03 and 04, including Evangelical and Catholic Theology, History, Eastern European History, Classical Archaeology, Greek and Latin Philology, Art History, Art Education, Musicology, and Philosophy. It is structured so that its individual subjects can also be combined with philological subjects from department 05 (German Studies, English Studies, Romance Studies, Slavic Studies) as well as with Sociology, Political Science, and Education (department 03). Students develop historical, critical-hermeneutic, and both philological and rhetorical-argumentative language skills that were acquired during their B.A. studies at JLU or comparable humanities bachelor's programs at other universities. Engagement with artistic mediation and design is also a possible component.
