Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften [History of the Natural Sciences]History of Natural Sciences

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The History of Natural Sciences is an important prerequisite for conducting and evaluating current research. The aim of the subject is to investigate and demonstrate the dependencies, connections, and interactions between the natural sciences and society. Due to its special interdisciplinary character, it forms a bridge between natural sciences and humanities. History of Natural Sciences can be taken at the University of Hamburg as a minor subject in all Bachelor's degree programs. In addition, part of the course offerings can be chosen as an additional area of the minor subject 'Medieval Studies'. The History of Natural Sciences is represented in the departments of Biology and Physics. The period covered in the courses ranges from early civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia) through Greco-Roman antiquity and the European Middle Ages to the 19th and 20th centuries. Special attention is paid to the influence of intercultural knowledge transfer, such as between the Arabic-Islamic and Latin-Christian cultural spheres in the Middle Ages.
