German Studies/Études germaniques

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The integrated Master's program in German Studies/Études germaniques at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the French Université Bourgogne Europe (UBE) aims to impart methodological skills and historical knowledge, theoretical knowledge and practical skills, with a focus on the tradition and diversification of literary culture against the background of media evolution from the Middle Ages to the present. The main focus in the Master's program is on the ability to grasp complex issues, examine them critically, reflect on them in connection with other issues, and present them according to the specific requirements of scientific argumentation. For German studies students whose native language is not German, this program offers the opportunity to deepen their language skills, especially mastery of scientific terminology, and to expand and deepen their knowledge of German culture. For native German speakers, the program offers the opportunity to view their own culture from a new perspective. The broad field of German studies is expanded by the French component of 'Civilisation' and the history of ideas. Additionally, the ability to see German language and literature in comparative terms as a foreign and native language is developed. Thus, in German studies, the stay in France becomes an important part of the education, as it promotes intercultural perspectives on German language and literature.
