About the Program

The German Studies major teaches students how to deal with the German language and literature in their historical and contemporary manifestations and how to observe them in their processes of change, in their intercultural interdependencies and their relation to other areas of society such as art, religion, philosophy, economics, politics, law, etc. Students gain insights into current research topics and work on projects with colleagues from Germany's largest language history institute (Forschungszentrum Deutscher Sprachatlas) and the Centre for the Recording of German Textual Tradition of the Middle Ages (Handschriftencensus). The program prepares students for professional fields in the cultural public sphere including libraries and archives, book trade and publishers, cultural journalism, public relations, media, museums, language teaching institutions, speech training, theatre management, universities, and newspapers.
