German Linguistics

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The aim of the M.A. German Linguistics is the research-oriented acquisition of in-depth knowledge from all sub-areas of linguistics (phonetics, lexicology, grammar, pragmatics, text and conversation analysis, language change and linguistic variation), with a focus on empirical, especially corpus-based methods. All modules are compulsory elective modules, so that an individual profile formation is possible. At the Institute of German Linguistics, each linguistic core area (phonetics/phonology, grammar, pragmatics and language history) is represented by its own professorship, which ensures specialised training at a high research level. In addition, interdisciplinary interested students can take modules from the offerings of English Linguistics, Indo-Germanic Studies, German Studies Abroad and the M.A. Political Communication.
