Geoscientists combine worldwide field research with state-of-the-art laboratory work and computer technology, using methods and basic knowledge from various scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. The program at JGU Mainz has a focus on climate research, with three research groups working on 'past climate'. Other focus areas include geothermal/geo-resource research, gemology, petrology, volcanology, and environmental geochemistry.
