About the Program

Gender Studies is concerned with the social category "gender". In society, gender plays a significant role in determining systems of human thinking and knowledge as well as social and cultural forms of organisation. Gender Studies examines the creation, meaning and relevance of gender on various levels. The program is organized as an interdisciplinary subject at Göttingen University. The goal is to gain insight into the development, importance and effects of the category "gender" in society, culture and the sciences, and to open up new job perspectives in several areas of activity. The programme looks at gender from an interdisciplinary perspective, examining the historical, social and biographical consequences of gender constructions to reach a new understanding of human beings, society, and nature. Students take courses from 19 subjects across seven faculties, organized by the cross-faculty "Gender Studies Work Group".
