Gebärdensprachen [Sign Languages]Sign Languages

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The sign languages of the deaf are understood as minority languages. From this perspective, sociolinguistic problems arise, such as the consequences of non-recognition of linguistic human rights or the question of sign language imagery. The latter contradicts the Western understanding of language and theoretically challenges various disciplines. The Bachelor's program 'Sign Languages' imparts specialized knowledge about sign languages and deaf communities. Students should acquire competence in German Sign Language (DGS) and the scientific methods to critically reflect on this specialized knowledge. Central subjects of the field are the sign languages of the deaf, especially DGS, as well as the theoretical examination of them. This includes sign language linguistic description attempts, the reflection of their application (for example in theater and poetry) and the study of the development of sign language writing systems.
