Food Chemistry

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

Food chemistry is a special applied discipline of chemistry, originating from the legal mandate to protect the consumer when handling food. In addition to food analysis, food chemists deal with issues regarding nutrition and health, functional properties of food and ingredients, and product development. The 4-semester Master's degree programme builds on the Bachelor's degree and provides in-depth knowledge in food chemistry, chemometrics, drinking and waste water chemistry, food toxicology, food technology, sensory analysis, quality management, food safety and food law. It also covers environmental analysis, consumer goods, cosmetics, and animal feed. The programme culminates with a Master's thesis in the 4th semester. The degree qualifies graduates to pursue vocational training to become a "state-certified food chemist" or to continue with doctoral studies.
