About the Program

The professorship ensures depth and continuity of teaching in the field of historical developments of heterogeneous positions in film history and film theory - as an examination of experiments, film language(s) and theories of cinema up to post-cinema and post-digital discourses and previously little-researched or marginalized fields of film history. It is not the other side of practice, but sees itself as an integral part of artistic processes that - at the latest since cinema has become modern - must always refer to existing and already thought-out concepts. Teaching areas include: conveying and questioning existing approaches to film history and theory (such as economics, history of technology, social science studies, image and narrative structures in semiotic and pictorial historical research, explorations in the work of individual film artists), and promoting a critical-analytical understanding of film history and theory, which is understood as the result and mirror of social debates and positions derived from them that need to be renegotiated again and again (as opposed to perpetuating a fixed canon).
