Evolutionary Biology

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The English-language M.Sc. program "Evolutionary Biology" is a consecutive Master's program with a clear focus on research-oriented teaching. The program begins each winter semester with three mandatory modules that all students take together. Through these three modules, all students acquire uniform methodological knowledge in theory, laboratory work, and computer applications, as well as comprehensive knowledge in various aspects of modern evolutionary biology. In the second semester, students choose three elective modules offered by various research groups. These modules cover topics such as general and theoretical evolutionary biology, biotic interactions, ecology and behavior, population biology, anthropology, genomics, or bioinformatics. The third semester includes a project work corresponding to an extensive laboratory, theory, or computer course and includes independently conducted scientific experiments. The data generated in this module are analyzed and documented in the subsequent Master's thesis module. A final examination takes place at the end. Starting from the second semester, students can specialize in areas such as Molecular Ecology and Species Interactions, Evolutionary Anthropology, Genomics, Population Biology, Computational Biology, or Theoretical Evolutionary Biology.
