English Studies

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

English studies is dedicated to the investigation of the English language, literature and culture in their various present-day forms and in their historical development. As a major subject, a Bachelor's degree in English encompasses the scientific investigation of English languages (linguistics), literatures (literary studies) and cultures (cultural studies) as well as in-depth language training. Traditionally, Britain and North America are of central significance both in teaching and research, but there are also a number of classes on other varieties of the language, other literatures in English and other English-speaking cultures. The most important areas in the English studies degree programmes (linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies) are taught with varying prioritisations in addition to practical language education. Towards the end of the degree programme, students can select an area of specialisation (either linguistics or literary studies). The program can be studied in three variants: as a 75% major combined with a 25% minor, as two 50% majors (polyvalent Bachelor), or as a 25% minor specializing in one of three focus areas (linguistics, literary studies, or cultural studies). The total workload comprises 180 credit points, with the possibility of part-time study.
