About the Program

The program consists of a six-semester Bachelor of Education and Teaching followed by a four-semester Master of Secondary Education (Haupt- und Realschule). Students are required to choose a second subject in addition to English. The close links between the sub-disciplines of linguistics, literature and cultural studies are an outstanding feature of English and American Studies at Osnabrück. Research and teaching focus on a wide range of subjects including the English Renaissance (with emphasis on Shakespeare), 'Late Modern English', construction grammar, English-language literature for children and young people, American literature and culture, contemporary British culture, and English vocabulary and its teaching. The Master of Education degree is a prerequisite for admission to the period of school-based training called 'Referendariat'.
