About the Program

Empirical Cultural Studies focuses on the analysis of everyday cultural phenomena and practices in their historical and social dimensions. It aims to analyze contemporary societies and focuses on cultural processes and everyday life models. The Master's program is research-oriented, familiarizing students with current research fields and discussions in the discipline and guiding them towards independent scientific work. Following the principle of research-based learning, the Master's program is integrated into ongoing research projects at the institute through a two-semester research seminar and offers opportunities to gain experience with cooperation partners at home and abroad. Students can choose between two thematic focuses: 'City and Urbanity' and 'Technicity and Mediality'. The program prepares graduates not only for careers in academia (research, doctorate) but also qualifies them for professional fields in exhibitions, media, museums, libraries, archives, adult education, cultural offices, tour operators, or business consulting.
