Elementary Mathematics

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Elementary Mathematics is the area of mathematics that includes the basic skills that we deal with on a daily basis. It encompasses the basic mathematical terms and structures that human beings have worked with for centuries. In many areas of our lives, we both consciously and unconsciously deal with geometric figures, symmetry and patterns, numbers and operations, graphic representations and tables, algebraic structures and functional relationships. These are all part of the curriculum in the Grundschule, Hauptschule, and Realschule. Elementary mathematics at the University of Oldenburg teaches the technical and didactic basics of mathematics as a taught subject in these three kinds of schools. The Bachelor prepares students for a Master's programme, which enables them to teach at primary, lower secondary and intermediate schools or for special needs education, depending on their orientation. Fields of employment also exist outside the school sector, e.g. in the qualified diagnosis and support of children with mathematical learning difficulties or with special talents, in the development of digital learning offers or in textbook publishers.
