About the Program

The Film University's Digital Media Culture undergraduate program is based on the disciplines of media and communication studies. Offering education at the highest level, the program provides students with a comprehensive perspective on the world of digital media. The program deals with phenomena such as digitalisation, mediatisation, convergence, globalisation, commercialisation, interactivity, transmediality and participation. It provides a holistic view of the world of digital media, including knowledge of the culture and social relevance of digital media, media theory and research, dramaturgy, production and realisation, market and possible uses, as well as basics in dealing with digital media technology. The program is unique as it relies heavily on collaboration with other degree programs of the Film University, combining scientific work with practical, artistic, technological, and production-related aspects. With only 18 students enrolled yearly, small-sized classes allow for personalized instruction. The special feature of this Bachelor's program is the combination of science, art and practice, combining theories of communication science and media studies with empirical research methods to better understand digital media phenomena. This unique mix is achieved through science-based seminars supplemented by practical projects, internships, excursions, and lectures from media industry professionals. The program has a modular structure covering: 1st & 2nd semester: Introductory courses, fundamentals of theory and empiricism of digital media, culture and history of digital media, analysis of digital media; 3rd & 4th semester: The digital media system, aesthetics and dramaturgy of digital media, artistic-scientific multimedia development, special topics of digital media cultures, media practice (including internships and practical projects); 5th & 6th semester: Practice of researching digital media phenomena, economics of digital media, professional practice, and concludes with a bachelor's thesis, colloquium, and oral examination. The 4th semester is ideal for studying abroad at partner universities.
