The Lehramt Erweiterungsfach leads to a further teaching qualification for a teaching position at public schools. The qualification is only valid in conjunction with a successfully completed Erstes Staatsexamen für das Lehramt or an equivalent qualification. Deutsch addresses the capacity and effects of the German language and literature in German as regards its historical development, its aesthetic particularity, and its social conditions on a scientific level. The degree programme at the Technical University of Darmstadt is oriented towards the three components of German Studies: Modern German Literary Studies, German Linguistics and German Language and Literature of the Middle Ages (Medieval Studies). In the course of their studies, students can choose either Literary Studies or Linguistics as their focus.
