About the Program

The Master's program in Demography and Sociology focuses on demographic change as one of the most important societal challenges of the 21st century. Students are trained to analyze challenges such as aging society, skilled labor shortages, pension financing, and migration from a social science perspective and to competently discuss solution approaches. The program welcomes students from various disciplines including social sciences, sociology, economics, psychology, or statistics. In the first two semesters, students take required modules in social structure analysis, sociological theory, family sociology, demography, and empirical data analysis. In the second and third semesters, specialization is possible through elective modules in core areas of demography and sociology, political and cultural sciences, economics, or data science. In the third semester, students complete a research internship where they learn how to develop a research idea into scientific results. The program collaborates with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, one of the most renowned demographic research institutes worldwide. Graduates have diverse career opportunities including academic research, positions at statistical offices, government agencies, and private sector roles, particularly in data analysis.
