About the Program

Creative Writing for the Stage (Szenisches Schreiben) is an eight-semester artistic program at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) focused on developing dramatic writing skills. The program is divided into a basic study period (Grundstudium) of four semesters and an advanced study period (Hauptstudium) of four semesters. The basic study period focuses on developing awareness of the specific requirements of scenic writing in spatial, performative and dialogical dimensions, developing the ability to create playable characters, their motivations and actions, developing precision and individuality of linguistic expression, and acquiring an overview of historical development and current diversity of dramaturgical models. The advanced study period expands on these competencies and includes experiences in interdisciplinary projects, transfer of dramatic knowledge to related media like film/television and radio/audio drama, and work experience in other genres like musical theater and prose. The program includes a high proportion of independent work focused on play development and artistic self-exploration. The program admits new students every two years in the summer semester.
