Chemistry - dual

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

About the Program

How is a new liquid crystalline dye for mobile phone displays or a new functional polymer for car windows developed? How are transition elements and rare earths combined to form high-performance magnets? What catalytic properties do precious metal compounds have? How is a new pharmacologically active substance found and optimised for marketability? These and related research and development-oriented questions are dealt with by the dual degree programme in chemistry with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biotechnology in cooperation with the companies Merck, Boehringer and Evonik. In six semesters at the university (Mondays and Fridays) students learn the basics of chemistry (general, inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, industrial chemistry and biochemistry), mathematics, physics and computer science. Internships are carried out in the training laboratories of companies (four days per week). In weekend or holiday seminars, specialised English, literature research and presentation techniques are deepened and basic economic and legal qualifications are taught.
