About the Program

Catholic Theology is the critical, scientific reflection on religion and Christian faith. The study of theology deals with the biblical foundations of Christianity and its further history, the development of doctrine and the normative convictions and formulations that emerged from it, ethical values, norms and justifications, as well as the diverse forms of Christian practice and church institutions. The program covers biblical theology (Old and New Testament and their social, cultural and religious environment), historical theology (church and theology/cultural history, history of post-biblical Judaism), religious studies (focus on religious history), systematic theology (philosophical basic questions, fundamental theology, dogmatics and ecumenism), theological ethics (moral theology and social ethics), practical theology and religious education. The program also offers specializations in religious history and gender research. Students acquire competencies that qualify them for activities in church or non-church education, counseling and media sectors, publishing, social-charitable areas, cultural institutions or business enterprises (e.g., in human resources).
