About the Program

Book Science studies all aspects of books: their history and role in the present, high literature and everyday readings, young readers and book lovers, printing technology and market analysis for the book trade, children's books and non-fiction, the psychology of reading and loving books, and practical questions about local successes for audiobooks or global effects of digitization. The Gutenberg Institute is the largest institute for book science research and teaching in German-speaking countries. Students learn about the structures, traditions, and contradictions of the book and reading world - from the long history of books and their readers to the book market, its economic and legal logic - at local, national, and global levels. The program includes book trade and publishing history, technical and design dimensions of books, economic functions of media markets, book reception, media law, book as a cultural asset, and interactions between different media forms.
