Biotechnology

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

About the Program

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary, applied science that interfaces to classic natural sciences and engineering subjects in various ways. In the 7-semester Bachelor's program in Biotechnology, students learn how biological systems - such as mammalian, fungal, or bacterial cells - are used to improve our lives. This includes understanding the causes of diseases and developing cutting-edge medications and diagnostic procedures (red biotechnology). In white biotechnology, a vast range of valuable products are manufactured on a large scale in an environmentally friendly way - from antibiotics, vitamins, and nutritional supplements to enzymes and plastics. Environmental biotechnology (grey biotechnology) plays an increasingly important role, especially in view of advancing climate change and the scarcity of finite resources such as oil and gas. Biotechnological processes and products can replace chemical or petroleum-based processes and are therefore essential for the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy and circular economy. The program features a high level of practical relevance with numerous laboratory exercises and an integrated internship semester in industry or a scientific institution.
