About the Program

The Master of Arts in American Studies offers more than just country-specific literature and cultural studies. Students engage with current topics such as migration, protest movements, and climate change, and their historical developments. The program examines the USA in its constant interaction with other societies. In this master's program, students explore society and media history, using these as a basis for investigating complex global phenomena and connections. Research subjects can include film, literature, video games, or historical source material, in fields such as African American Studies, Indigenous Studies, Digital Humanities, and more. Through individual focus areas, students can pursue their own research interests within this transnational and interdisciplinary program. Practice-oriented teaching formats help students develop their profile for both academic and non-academic job markets. The program consists of 120 ECTS credits and can be studied as a single-subject Master with in-depth specialization, in combination with another supplementary subject, or with additional certificate qualifications. The M.A. program consists of eight modules: Methodology, Early American Studies, Cultural Studies, Modern American Literature and Media, Advanced Research and Professional Orientation, Advanced American Literature and Media Studies, Advanced Interdisciplinary Research, and Advanced Research and Thesis Preparation. The program emphasizes transnational dimensions of American Studies and encourages study abroad experiences at partner universities in the United States, Canada, or China.
