Art history

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Art History focuses on the production, function, impact, and cultural context of artworks from the early Middle Ages to the present. The program aims to deepen and expand previously acquired knowledge and skills in the field, incorporating current research findings and debates as well as interdisciplinary aspects. The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Institute (CDFI), named after the prominent Romantic artist who was born and raised in Greifswald, combines Art History and Fine Arts under one roof, which is a rare combination in German higher education. Excursions within Germany and abroad, as well as museum and studio visits, are integral parts of the program. One of the focal points in teaching and research is the Baltic Sea region, with art historical topics related to Scandinavia or the Baltic states being addressed in an interdisciplinary framework. The program also has a strong practical orientation, with Master's students having the opportunity to be involved in research projects. Graduates can work in scientific institutions such as museums or heritage conservation, as exhibition curators, in publishing houses, cultural journalism, art trade, and tourism.
