About the Program

The Archaeological Sciences program aims to reconstruct and interpret past cultures and living environments. The focus is on material remains and archaeological findings, with written sources included when available. The spectrum of disciplines in Frankfurt ranges from prehistory to the Middle Ages, from Europe to Asia and Africa. The Bachelor's program guides students to develop skills and knowledge to explore material remains of past human existence, analyze them based on specific questions, and place them in their historical, cultural, and social context. The program provides methodological and theoretical foundations of archaeological research practice, combined with in-depth knowledge of specific cultural and environmental history. The Institute for Archaeological Sciences offers an exceptionally broad range of subjects organized in three departments: Archaeology and Cultural History of the Near East and Classical Archaeology as well as Ancient Oriental Philology (Dept. I), Archaeology and History of the Roman Provinces and Archaeology of Coins, Money and Economy in Antiquity (both Dept. II), and Prehistory and Early History of Eurasia and Africa (Dept. III). The program includes practical modules with internships and excursions to archaeological sites and institutions.
