About the Program

The Near Eastern Archaeology program focuses on the development of material and intellectual culture in a geographical area extending from Turkey to Pakistan. The emphasis is on Mesopotamia, the region between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, the ancient cultural region of Sumer and Akkad or Assyria and Babylonia. The program also examines surrounding regions including Palestine/Israel, Syria and Jordan, Asia Minor and the Caucasus, as well as Iran and the Persian Gulf areas. The time period covered spans from the beginnings of sedentarization in the 10th millennium BC, through the emergence of ancient Near Eastern civilizations since the invention of writing in the 4th millennium BC, the peaks of interregional contacts in the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, until the beginning of Hellenism. The program also includes the art and culture of post-Hellenistic and Islamic periods through the subdiscipline of Islamic Archaeology and Art History, extending the period of study to the present day. The Institute for Archaeological Sciences has an Ancient Oriental Collection that is frequently incorporated into various courses, allowing students to work with original objects.
