About the Program

The Master's program "Archaeology and Cultural History of the Ancient Mediterranean" has a socio-anthropological and cultural-historical focus and deals with the study of material remains of antiquity between the 3rd/2nd millennium BC (Minoan-Mycenaean era) and the 6th century AD (Late Antiquity and Early Christianity). The analysis and interpretation of ancient life and imagery are central to the program. By the end of their studies, graduates have acquired in-depth competence in the scientific handling of political, social, religious, economic, and artistic phenomena of antiquity and their development in modern times. Hamburg's archaeology program has an interdisciplinary orientation with a special focus on field research (especially prospection, research diving, archaeometry).
