Archäologie, klassischeClassical Archaeology

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Classical Archaeology deals with the material evidence of Greek-Roman culture. The time frame extends from Greek prehistory (15th century BC) to late antiquity (6th/7th century AD). The geographical area includes the Mediterranean countries, the Near East, and Southeast and Western Europe. The aim of the subject is to create a vivid picture of ancient culture through the analysis and interpretation of material evidence and by incorporating written tradition. The focus is on monuments of fine art, all other objects and buildings from ancient times, and landscapes insofar as they have been changed by humans. Methods include the classification of objects and their cultural-historical interpretation as well as archaeological excavations and surface investigations. The study aims to provide fundamental knowledge of ancient monuments, train visual memory, develop differentiated and problem-oriented verbalization and communication of complex, initially only visually experienceable facts, and develop a flexible yet critical methodological awareness. Beyond the professional training, key qualifications for various professional activities are taught: structured thinking, interdisciplinary work, communication skills, handling of new media and presentation techniques, modern foreign languages.
