Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Near Eastern Archaeology program focuses on the study of early settlements, temples, and graves from ancient Southwest Asia. Students explore over 10,000 years of cultural history (10,000 BCE to 600 CE) in an area encompassing modern-day Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, the Levant (Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, Jordan), the Arabian Peninsula, Cyprus, and the South Caucasus, with a traditional emphasis on Mesopotamia. The program teaches students to work with archaeological traces and material remains such as architecture, wall reliefs, seal images, and everyday objects. Key research questions include the impact of climate change on pre-modern societies, the development from natural to cultural landscapes, the organization of early city-states and empires, the emergence of the first cities, and critical engagement with the colonial history of archaeology. Students acquire comprehensive expertise and diverse archaeological competencies including digital documentation, monument and object analysis, archaeological practice, and museum work.
