About the Program

Classical Archaeology is understood as a modern cultural science. The program focuses on the study of material objects from all areas of human life and function - from evidence of economic life and religious objects to differentiated works of sculpture, painting, and architecture. These can contribute to the understanding of the world and culture from the time of Homer to late antiquity. The study teaches the art of description, reconstruction, and interpretation. Students train their eye by learning to organize the abundance of material and interpret it in connection with written testimonies preserved from antiquity. The program includes practical components such as excursions to excavation sites and museums both domestically and abroad, participation in excavations, courses in drawing archaeological finds, involvement in exhibition projects, and learning digital methodology. Archaeological disciplines are unusually broadly represented at JGU, alongside Classical Archaeology through Egyptology, Near Eastern Archaeology, Prehistoric and Early Historical Archaeology, and Byzantine Archaeology.
